Bike received happy girlThe Leland Optimist Club celebrated three local elementary students this month with a surprise gift that brought big smiles: brand-new bicycles.

First grader Avah Warren and third graders Jeremiah Gillis and Michael Gillis were selected from Edna M. Scott Elementary School for their consistently positive attitudes, kindness and helpfulness throughout the school year.

Each student received a new bike, along with safety equipment including a helmet, lock, pump, lights and reflectors.

“These students exemplify the values of optimism and service,” the club said in a statement. “They look for the good in others and lead by example.”bikes

The Leland Optimist Club is part of Optimist International, a global service organization focused on encouraging young people and strengthening communities. The club partners with local schools and groups to recognize students who embody the principles of the Optimist Creed, which encourages strength, positivity and integrity.

Club members expressed their gratitude to Edna M. Scott Elementary and the Leland School District for helping identify students who represent the spirit of the organization’s mission.
