A message from our editor regarding the mass shooting in Leland, MS

I’ve received messages and a call from national journalists this morning — before I’ve even finished my coffee — asking for comments about the mass shooting in Leland last night.
It’s difficult to find accurate information online right now. My background is in art, education, and storytelling. I came to journalism through community — not politics, but people.
Like so many of us here, I’m still trying to process what happened: the shock, the grief, and the heaviness of seeing our small town in national headlines for something so tragic.
To give some perspective — this town is smaller than my high school outside Chicago. When something like this happens here, everyone feels it. Even if we don’t know the victims personally, we know their neighbors, their teachers, their friends. The connections are that close.
I’ve only lived here a year, yet I’m already stitched into this fabric. The grief feels personal because this community has become home — and when home hurts, we all do.
As both a journalist and a neighbor, I feel the deep responsibility of how this story is told. Our community is small, our bonds are close, and when violence strikes, the pain ripples through every corner.
Here’s what is publicly confirmed:
• The tragedy unfolded near the close of a homecoming afterparty — a large block gathering in downtown Leland — just as the city’s midnight curfew was approaching.
• Four people were killed and at least twelve others injured in the shooting.
• According to Newsweek, which cited Mayor John Lee’s comments to CBS, the shooting happened around midnight.
(The Guardian quotes State Sen. Derrick Simmons on timing and airlifts. )
• The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the case. No suspects or names have been released at this time.
For any journalists covering this story — especially those outside our region — I ask for compassion and care:
• Please prioritize accuracy over speed.
• Respect families’ privacy and grief. Wait for official confirmation before publishing names.
• Focus on humanity and community, not sensationalism.
And remember: in a town like Leland, every word lands close to home.
We are hurting, but we are also holding one another close — neighbors holding neighbors, even in silence.
— Lora
Update: There will be a press conference at City Hall at 2pm today.
