Garden Club brings fresh creativity to Fall

The Leland Deer Creek Garden Club frolicked into fall at its Nov. 5 meeting, trading in rakes for creativity during a hands-on leaf manipulation workshop.

Pat Young — former Garden Clubs of Mississippi State President and a nationally recognized flower show judge — led the program, showing members how leaves can be folded, curled, twisted, and coaxed into whimsical shapes. Before long, the clubhouse was filled with aspidistra loops, curled ti leaves, and twisted monstera ribbons as members tried their hand at the techniques. Plants especially well-suited for leaf manipulation include aspidistra (cast iron plant), ti leaves, hosta, liriope, monstera, palm, and philodendron leaves—varieties known for their strength and flexibility, allowing them to hold shapes beautifully in both fresh and dried arrangements.

Using wire, staples, and a bit of flair, gardeners crafted playful botanical designs that brought out the colors and textures of the season.
Hostesses Kristy Schuerer, Karen Swain, Kathy Simmons and Beth O’Reilly closed the meeting with refreshments, sending members home inspired to add a touch of autumn magic to their holiday arrangements and to continue the club’s tradition of creativity and community involvement.
