Leland Garden Club proposes plan to revitalize Leland flower bed

At the Leland Board of Alderperson’s regular monthly meeting for the month of July, Leigh King and Faith Austin were placed on the agenda on behalf of the Leland Garden Club. King said that the Leland flower bed located at the intersection of Highway 82 and Broad Street is long overdue for a makeover.

The flower bed is one of the attractions that is first seen when you are passing through town on the highway. It is filled with shrubs that spell out “Leland.” The flower bed has since been neglected and is in need of an update. With vines growing over the fence, a torn flag flying on the flag pole, and dying greenery surrounding the shrubs, King and Austin propose a plan on behalf of the Leland Garden Club to bring it back to life.

They stated that since the Street and Sanitation Department is already tasked with a lot of different duties, they figured help from the Garden Club on this particular matter would be beneficial to the beautification of Leland.

“Even though we have City workers, we still need the help of citizens to keep our town beautiful. It takes a village,” King stated.

They were granted unanimous approval by the Board of Alderpersons to partner with the Street and Sanitation Department to make this project a reality. The Alderpersons agreed that the project would help Leland and take some of the burden of working through the summer heat off of City employees.

“This is a group effort. It’s not about what Leland can do for us, it is about what we can do for Leland,” King assured.
With the approval of the Leland Board of Alderpersons, the project is to be underway sometime in the coming weeks.
