Bill No. 1524 proposes unifying school districts

Representative Rob Roberson, formerly of Greenville but currently representing Starkville, introduced House Bill Number 1524 during the last regular (2024) legislative session at the Capitol. Roberson is a member of the House Education Committee. The bill proposes the restructuring of the four public school districts in Washington county: Greenville, Hollandale, Leland and Western Line.

The proposal indicates there would be two districts after consolidation: Greenville Public School District and Washington Consolidated School District. The Greenville Public School District would remain the same. The Washington Consolidated School District would be comprised of Leland, Hollandale and Western Line school districts.

The proposed consolidation would also mean a restructuring of the district administration, trustees, superintendents and more. Under the proposal, the administrative office for the new district would be located in Avon.

If the bill passes, each public school located in Washington County would be consolidated to the appointed district.
