Celebrating the magic of Christmas on Deer Creek

by Keri Baldwin

The city of Leland celebrated its annual Christmas on Deer Creek festival last month. There was Christmas magic at every corner. From the string lights adorning a significant portion of downtown, to the floats on the creek, there was holiday cheer everywhere.

“Christmas on Deer Creek was once again a huge success for the City of Leland,” said Rob Baker, Leland Chamber of Commerce President. “The influx of festival goers was a huge boom for the Leland and all of Washington county. We want to thank Sherry Smythe and all of her many volunteers for a job well done.”

Children were able to visit Santa and Mrs. Claus before his trek down the creek. Mayor Kenny Thomas and Nancy Jo King were the grand marshals of the Christmas parade. Local vendors and food trucks lined the streets. Run Run Ruduck brought out festive attire. There was music throughout the day and into the night, culminating with a performance by Forever Motown and a whimsical firework display.

“None of this would have been possible without our wonderful sponsors,” Sherry Smythe con-tinued. “There are so many people that come together to make this event as wonderful as it is-from the electric department to the Red Apron Ladies. It is a community event backed by community effort. We continue to raise money to add more decorations. It seems to be more magical every year.”

Planning has already begun for next year’s festival, which is set for the first weekend in December.
