LHS Class of 1976 commemorates milestone by investing in the future

As part of its 50th class reunion celebration, the Leland High School Class of 1976, known as the “Bicentennial Class,” commemorated the milestone by investing in the future of local students through a philanthropic scholarship initiative.

During May 2026 graduation, two graduating seniors, Jordyn Betts and Makynzie Thornton, were selected from a competitive pool of candidates and recognized for their outstanding academic achievement, engaging community service, and leadership excellence. Each student received a $1,200 scholarship award as part of the class’s effort to support higher education and encourage continued success.

The Class of 1976 awarded a total of $2,400 in scholarships, reflecting its commitment to giving back to the community and inspiring the next generation of leaders.

“The Leland High School Class of 1976 proudly congratulates Jordyn Betts and Makynzie Thornton, as well as their families, on this well-deserved recognition,” class representatives said. “We are honored to support these exceptional students and encourage them to pursue their academic goals with confidence and determination.”

The scholarship initiative serves as a lasting tribute to the Class of 1976’s 50-year legacy while reinforcing the importance of educational achievement and community engagement.

Souvenir keepsake coasters were presented to those classmates in attendance and are available to those that were not, according to Vanessa Adams. It was such a wonderful fellowship for those who attended this event, says Adams.
