Mattie Smith celebrates 90th birthday

By Guest Columnist Briggett Carter-Meachem

On November 11, there was a joyful celebration for the 90th birthday of Mattie Smith, a lifelong resident of Leland. Mattie has been a rock for her family and a light in the community, touching many lives over the years. She is the proud mother of six children, including the late Beulah Gordon, Patrina Smith and Willie Smith, and her surviving children Salinda Wright, Doris Chambers and Lavon Smith. Mattie comes from a large family with fourteen siblings; her sister Estella Jackson, who lives in Peoria, Illinois, will be turning 99 in December.

For many, Mattie’s home at 211 Robb Street is a pillar in Leland – a welcoming place where family and friends have always gathered. With open arms, she greets each guest and family member, making sure no one leaves hungry and everyone feels at home. Mattie has taken great pride in her home, her family and her faith, finding joy in watching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow.

While she has faced health challenges in recent years, Mattie’s strength and spirit remain an inspiration. As we honor her 90 years of life, we invite everyone who sees her around town or at the doctor’s office to join in celebrating by sharing a kind word or smile. She’s not just a grandmother to her family – she’s a beloved figure in our community.
