Mayor and Alderpersons to be elected on June 3

Leland voters will head to the polls on June 3 to decide who will be their City leaders for the next four years.

Following the Democratic primary on April 1, the final slate of candidates for the positions of Mayor and Alderpersons has been established. All candidates are either running on the Democratic ticket or as Independents, so no Republican primary was held.

Unofficial Democratic primary results for the mayoral position showed John Lee receiving 395 votes, with contenders Brandon Keith Taylor trailing with 164 votes and Jasmine Styles with 70 votes; so Lee will progress to the general election ballot. Lee will face Independent candidate Lisa M. Bush on June 3. Current mayor Kenny Thomas did not seek reelection.

Independent Allen R. Amos will face incumbent Democrat Barbara Rose Brooks in the Ward 1 Alderperson election. Brooks was unopposed in the Democratic primary.

For the Ward 2 Alderperson position, Democrat Johnnie Jones, Sr. will run unopposed, so Jones will assume the Ward 2 duties on July 1.

Jones won the Democratic primary with 90 votes, beating incumbent Ward 2 Alderperson Tammoral Nealon, who received 75 votes.

Democrat Bridgette Adley was unopposed for the Ward 3 position in the Democratic primary and will face Independent Terron Deon Morris, Sr. in the general election. Current incumbent John Lee is running for mayor.

Also unopposed in the Democratic primary was Karne “Neiecy” S. Walker for the Ward 4 Alderperson role. Michael S. Street, an Independent, will run against Walker for the position in the general election. Current incumbent Ward 4 Alderperson Michael Thomas did not seek reelection.

Ward 5 Alderperson and current incumbent Nancy Joy King, an Independent, is unopposed for that position in the general election and will assume her duties on July 1.

The voter registration deadline to vote in the June 3 municipal election is May 5. Those who wish to register to vote in person may do so at Leland City Hall. Registration can also be mailed but must be postmarked by May 5 in order to be eligible to vote on June 3.

Absentee in-person voting can be done at Leland City Hall during normal business hours, as well as on Saturday, May 24, and Saturday, May 31, from 8 a.m. to noon, also at City Hall.

For the June 3 general election for municipal offices of mayor and alderpersons, polling locations will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Ward 1 and Ward 2 voters will vote at the Leland Health Department building, located at 801 North Broad Street.

Ward 3 and Ward 4 voters will vote at the Leland Library, located at 107 North Broad Street.

Ward 5 voters will vote at the Leland Rotary Club at 411 California Avenue.
