Military Wall of Honor dedication ceremony set for August 29
Leland’s Military Wall of Honor will be officially dedicated with a special ceremony on August 29. The keynote speaker for the event will be Jeremiah Gipson, Colonel, USACE.
Multiple Leland groups and individuals have invested their time, efforts and money into bring the project to life for the city, to serve as a tribute to the country’s patriotism and to honor veterans who have served in the U.S. Military.
The Military Wall of Honor is a legacy project initiated by the Leland High School (LHS) Class of 1963. The project is co-sponsored by the Leland Chamber of Commerce and the City of Leland.
The first phase of the project, which will be formally dedicated in conjunction with the 2026 LHS reunion, includes the historical monument as well as twelve granite tablets with the names of over 2,400 soldiers from the Leland School District engraved on them. In the future, the panels can be expanded to include over 10,000 names.
The memorial recognizes all Lelanders – living and deceased – who answered the call to serve, representing every branch and era of military service. The Wall of Honor is designed to serve as a visible reminder of the courage, sacrifice and patriotism that have shaped the community and the nation.
More than a monument, the Wall of Honor will be a place of reflection, gratitude, and remembrance. It will offer families, friends, residents, and visitors a space to pause and acknowledge the personal stories behind each name – stories of service, resilience, and devotion to country. By honoring both past and present service members, the Wall will connect generations and ensure that their contributions are never forgotten.
The ceremony will be on Broad Street in front of the Leland Public Library. Seating will be available.
The public is invited to the Dedication Ceremony, which will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Methodist Christian Life Center at 202 North Broad Street (in front of the Leland Public Library). Seating will be available.
