WCLS Summer Reading opens May 27

WCLS

The Washington County Library System (WCLS) Summer Reading Program 2025 is on the horizon, and children of all ages are encouraged to visit the libraries in June and July for a fun-filled adventure. This year’s theme is “Color Our World!”

Studies have shown that children must read during the summer to avoid the “summer slide,” a phenomenon where students lose academic skills during their summer break. Research shows that children can lose up to twenty to thirty percent of their reading progress over the summer months without consistent reading practice.

The WCLS Summer Reading Program aims to help parents and caregivers keep children engaged and learning during the summer break using fun and educational activities.

Every Thursday at 10:30 a.m., the Leland library will have exciting activities designed so that children don’t even notice that they’re learning, including live animal shows, magic shows, music, games, crafts and, of course, reading. Programs will be offered on Thursdays at 2 p.m. at the Greenville library, and other activities will be offered at all branch locations throughout the county.

In addition to the activities, each child who participates in the program for the summer will receive free books and the chance to win prizes, incentives that are not just fun, but can also encourage children to keep reading all summer long, preventing the loss of valuable learning time.

Parents are encouraged to keep their kids’ minds from going on vacation by registering their little bookworms for the Summer Reading Program starting May 27. For more information or to register, call 662-335-2331, or visit the Leland library at 107 North Broad Street.
