Leland HS students receive advanced skilled training

The Warren-Washington-Issaquena-Sharkey Community Action Agency (WWISCAA), through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), recently partnered with the Leland Public School District (LPSD) and LPSD Superintendent Jessie King to provide an opportunity for twenty-two high school students to receive advanced skilled training that could lead to a credential opening the door for increased employment opportunities in the local workforce.
Additionally, the students received work ethics training and will be provided summer jobs as part of the work experience element of the program.
Of the twenty-two students, twelve have now completed pharmacy tech and ten have completed welding. Additionally, all will receive their high school diplomas at graduation.
As a result of this partnership, these students will now be ready to enter the workforce with the capacity to earn above median wages and with an increased probability of longevity in the workforce, according to Jan Vaughn, coordinator of the program.
WIOA is the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014, and South Delta Planning and Development is the fiscal agent for the Delta Workforce Development Area. WWISCAA, a non-profit agency, is the contracted provider and is under the leadership of Jannis Williams.
