MS to mark National Hunting and Fishing Day, Saturday Sept. 27

On Saturday, September 27, 2025 the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks will join the nation in observing National Hunting and Fishing Day.

Governor Tate Reeves issued a proclamation recognizing the day, created in 1972 to honor hunters and anglers for their role in wildlife conservation. September opens key seasons in Mississippi, including dove and deer, and cooler weather improves fishing. License fees and excise taxes collected through the American System of Conservation Funding provide millions for habitat work each year.

“National Hunting and Fishing Day honors sportsmen and women whose passion and support have helped conserve Mississippi’s natural resources for generations,” MDWFP Executive Director Lynn Posey said. Residents are encouraged to celebrate by taking friends or family outdoors.

Call to action: Leland day plans:
• Morning: Walk Deer Creek, pick up litter, then cast a line where fishing is allowed.
• Midday: Picnic and birdwatching.
• Afternoon: Introduce a kid or neighbor to basic fishing. Check licenses first, and respect private property.
• All day: Leave no trace, and check local groups for any special plans for this day.
