Obituary: Charles “Chuck” Harold Dawkins, Jr.

Charles “Chuck” Harold Dawkins Jr. passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at the age of 72. He leaves behind a life marked by hard work, determination, service, and, above all, a deep love for his family.

Chuck was a gifted athlete from a young age and especially talented on the football field. While in the ninth grade, he won the Punt, Pass & Kick competition sponsored by Ford Motor Company, an accomplishment that showcased both his athletic ability and competitive spirit. Football continued to be an important part of his high school years.

Chuck attended Leland Academy, where he was also voted Most Handsome by his classmates before graduating with the Class of 1971. After high school, Chuck attended Mississippi Delta Community College, where he earned his degree in HVAC. He put those skills to work at Dawkins Appliance and later operated his own HVAC business. Chuck knew the meaning of hard work and carried that work ethic with him throughout his entire life. Over the years, his career took him in many different directions, including work in the casino industry and later with the federal government.

Chuck also proudly served his country as a member of the National Guard. Later in life, his work took him overseas, where he spent five years in Afghanistan. It was one of many chapters in a life filled with experiences that reflected his independence, determination, and willingness to work hard wherever life took him.

When Chuck wasn’t working, he enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, and throughout the years he was a member of numerous hunting clubs. He was also an amazing cook, and anyone lucky enough to sit down for one of his meals knew it. His family will especially remember his steaks; no one could cook a steak quite like Chuck.

Of all the things Chuck accomplished and enjoyed during his lifetime, however, nothing meant more to him than his family. He loved his children deeply, and his grandchildren held an especially treasured place in his heart. His grandchildren truly lit up his world. They brought him tremendous happiness, and the love and pride he had for them were unmistakable.

Chuck leaves behind his daughter, Lauren Dawkins Mclntire and her husband, Patrick, of Arcola, Mississippi, and their children, Layne, Josie, and Pate; his son, Jamie Dawkins and his wife, Alexis, of Madison, Mississippi, and their sons, Phoenix and James Atlas. He is also survived by his sister, Trudy Dawkins, of Commerce, Georgia, and her partner, Allen Edwards; his niece, Rebecca Pendrick, of Decatur, Georgia, and her daughter, Lenora; along with extended family and the many people who knew and loved him throughout his life.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Becky and Harold Dawkins Sr., his sister, Cassie and her husband, Richard Caudill.

During his 72 years, Chuck filled many roles as an athlete, serviceman, tradesman, business owner, outdoorsman, hardworking provider, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather. He served his country, built a career with his own hands, worked hard throughout his life, and experienced more than many people ever will.

But his accomplishments, the jobs he held, and the places life took him tell only part of his story. To those closest to him, he was simply Dad and Granddad. He was a father who loved his children and a grandfather whose world became a little brighter whenever his grandchildren were around.

In the end, Chuck’s greatest legacy will not be measured by the jobs he held, the places he traveled, or the accomplishments of which he was so deserving of pride. His greatest legacy is his family, the children he raised, the grandchildren he adored, and the memories and stories they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Chuck’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Arden Home Health and especially to Mikayla Manus of Delta Regional Hospice, for the exceptional care, kindness, and compassion shown to Chuck and his family. Their support and dedication during this time brought comfort when it was needed most and will always be deeply appreciated.

Graveside services will be held at 11 am on Friday August 14th, 2026 at Leland Stoneville Cemetery. Mortimer Funeral Home, Greenville has been entrusted with arrangements.
