three cleanersFifteen volunteers of all ages collected 27 bags of trash and additional debris Saturday during a community-wide cleanup based at City Hall, with additional volunteers working from a separate site at the Lions Club.
Participants gathered for “The Great Community Cleanup,” working in teams to remove litter from key corridors including Broad Street, Main Street and Deer Creek Drive, as well as areas near the police station, creek bank and surrounding neighborhoods.
Cleanup routes included multiple blocks along Broad Street extending to U.S. Highway 82, along with sections of Main Street and nearby side streets. Volunteers also cleared portions of the creek bank and public right-of-way areas. Based on routes, this is over 2 miles.
The 27-bag total reflects collections from the City Hall site only and does not include any totals from volunteers working out of the Lions Club location.
Organizers said data collected during the event will be compiled to measure the broader impact across Washington County. Additional information from the Mississippi Delta Nature Center is expected to provide a more complete assessment of cleanup efforts across the region.
Organizers said the effort served as a timely way to mark Earth Day through community action and local stewardship.
