Margaret Elizabeth “Susie” Colburn, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away on September 11, 2026, in Jackson, Mississippi. Born on July 20, 1965, in Drew, Mississippi, Susie spent most of her life in Mississippi, while also making memories and putting down roots in Texas and finding special places in her heart for the mountains of East Tennessee, the beach, and the Caribbean.
To know Susie was to know someone who loved fiercely. She had a way of making everyone feel like family, whether they had known her for forty years or had only just met her. Her house was always open, and there was always room for one more at the table. She loved having a house full of family and friends, eating, talking, laughing, and listening to the sounds of children playing. She did not simply welcome people into her home. She welcomed them into her heart.
Susie was funny, warm, thoughtful, caring, and deeply compassionate. She loved to laugh and had a gift for making other people laugh with her. Her presence was unmistakable, and the people who loved her knew they were loved in return, completely and without reservation.
In 2004, Susie married the love of her life, Doug Colburn. Susie was drawn to Doug not only because he was a race car driver, but because he was a strong man, a strength of character that she admired. Their marriage was built on a simple and enduring devotion: Doug took care of her, and she took care of him. They were partners, companions, and true soulmates.
Together, they enjoyed taking drives through the country, going to dirt-track races, vacationing on the beach, and cruising through the Caribbean with their best friends, Mike and Shanna Gargis.
Susie was a devoted mother to Patrick Blake Evans and Heather Misheal Lackey. She was always checking to make sure they were okay, always ready to answer the phone, and always reminding them that everything would be alright. She had a habit of quietly slipping money into their pockets “just in case” they needed it. She wanted nothing more than to have her children close, but she also loved them enough to encourage them to go out into the world, pursue their dreams, and build lives of their own.
Her greatest joy was being Mawmaw to her grandchildren, Dash Lackey, Laklyn Pitts, Archer Evans, and Marin Evans. She loved cuddling them, teasing them, reading to them, and spoiling them with treats, hugs, and kisses. She loved taking them swimming, going for walks, visiting parks, zoos, and aquariums, and simply being together. Even when they were apart, she found a way to be part of their lives, making a point to FaceTime with her grandchildren every Sunday. She was also a beloved “Gigi” to Walker, Cameran, and Lilah Townsend, proving once again that Susie never needed blood to define family.
Susie loved the simple pleasures of life. She loved to shop and had an impressive and seemingly endless collection of shoes. She rarely missed a Dallas Cowboys game, faithfully cheering them on week after week, even as they broke her heart year after year. She was a wonderful cook and an especially talented maker of desserts, and she loved sharing her recipes with others. For Susie, food was another way of showing love.
Christmas was her favorite time of year. She loved the joy of the season, knowing that family would come together, but most of all, she loved giving. Susie found happiness in making other people feel special, and there was perhaps no better expression of that than watching her give a gift to someone she loved.
Her generosity extended beyond her family. Susie was an avid supporter of St. Jude Children’s Hospital and cared deeply about supporting first responders in her community. Her faith was an important part of who she was, and she found a spiritual home in the Baptist church, attending services when she could.
Susie was blessed with friendships that became family. Her nearly 40-year friendship with Shanna Gargis was one of the great relationships of her life, and the friendship she shared with Shanna and Mike brought countless adventures and memories, from holidays and birthdays to cruises, beach trips, and football games. Susie had a remarkable ability to turn friendship into family, and those who were lucky enough to love her knew that she was truly one of a kind.
She is survived by her husband, Doug Colburn; her children, Blake Evans and his wife, Lyndsy, and Heather Lackey and her husband, David; her grandchildren, Dash Lackey, Laklyn Pitts, Archer Evans, and Marin Evans; her brother, Billy King; her sisters, Rebecca Norred and Sherri King; her nieces and nephews, Austin Colburn, Anna Colburn, Ruthie Colburn, Jason King, Aimee Boyd, Landry Loper, Landon Loper, Chandler Eubank, and Mika-Lyn Gargis; her aunt and uncle, Bobby and Janice Anderson; and her best friends, Shanna and Mike Gargis. She was preceded in death by her mother, Patricia Anderson Floyd; her father, Billy Rayburn King; her “Pops,” Donald Floyd; her adoptive father, Frank Pope, and her son, Christopher Eugene Evans.
Susie leaves behind much more than memories. She leaves behind a family that is larger because of her, friendships that became family because of her, recipes that will continue to be shared, stories that will continue to be told, and countless people who will always remember the way she made them feel.
Her home was always open, her table always had another seat, her heart always had room. She loved fiercely, she gave generously, she laughed often, and she made everyone feel like family. To those who knew her best, Susie was, and always will be, unforgettable.
