Leland Cub Gazette set to return
After several years of inactivity, the Leland Cub Gazette is preparing to return to the halls of Leland School.
Editor Jacob Venuti of The Leland Progress, along with Cynthia Bennett and Regina Bynum, met in September to discuss plans to bring the school newspaper back to life. The group discussed ways to create opportunities for students to become involved in their school, community and the field of journalism.
In partnership with the previous owner of The Leland Progress, Stephanie Patton, Bynum previously brought the Leland Cub Gazette back to life in 2016, when she served as the librarian at Leland High School.
Venuti said he hopes the return of the Leland Cub Gazette will give students an opportunity to develop their writing and reporting skills, while also encouraging them to become more engaged with the community around them.
Plans are currently underway to gather a student staff in the coming weeks. The group hopes to have the newspaper’s first issue completed and published in November.
The return of the Leland Cub Gazette will provide students with an opportunity to tell the stories of their school, highlight the accomplishments of their classmates and learn firsthand about the responsibilities that come with journalism.
The effort also aims to introduce a new generation of students to the importance of local journalism and the role it plays in keeping communities informed about upcoming events in the Leland Public School District.
